Athletic Highlights: April 19 – April 24, 2017
Baseball: The Lions closed out the regular season with a pair of wins over SAC rival Carson-Newman. The victories moved the Lions into fourth place in the league with a 14-9 conference record. Mars Hill is now 28-19 overall. The Lions will meet the third seed in the tournament, Newberry, on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn. Travis Owens (Toronto, Canada) hit .500 last week with three RBI, a double and two runs scored. Hunter Merrill (Pittsford, N.Y.) hit .444 with a double and three runs scored. He stole two bases that took his season total to 26. He leads the SAC in that category. Zac Brown (Albemarle, N.C.) threw five innings allowing just one hit and no earned runs to obtain his sixth win (6-3) on the mound in the first game against the Eagles. He struck out nine batters. As a team, Mars Hill leads the SAC in team earned run average (4.26).
Lacrosse: Junior attack Dima Ferreira (Abingdon, Va.) continued his stellar play as of late, leading the Lions to a 2-0 record with wins over North Greenville (11-8) and Brevard (14-11). Ferreira finished the week with seven goals, five assists, and eight groundballs. His eight points versus Brevard were a career-high.
Softball: Hannah Smith (Indian Trail, N.C.) provided the offense for the Blue and Gold over the weekend, turning in a .390 batting average. Smith collected her second homerun of the year against Coker to go along with three runs scored, four RBI and a double.
Men's Track & Field: On Friday, April 21 at the Duke Twilight Meet, Nick Resor (Matthews, N.C.) ran 33:40 in the 10,000-meter race, good enough for fifth place overall. Saturday, at USC Brandon Beard (Fairfield, Ohio) ran the second fastest time in MHU history in the 1500-meters (3:57.64), while Matthew Rogers (Walkertown, N.C.) ran a personal best in the men's 3000-meters with a time of 9:26.92. Spencer Shade (Fairview, N.C.) collected a fifth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 13' 3".
