Athletic Highlights: September 11 – September 18, 2017
Football: The Lions won their home and South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday afternoon over Lenoir-Rhyne, 43-28. Big plays were key in Mars Hill's victory. Keshaun Taylor was on the receiving end of three passes for 93 yards and one score while also throwing one touchdown pass that covered 44 yards to Craig Rucker. Taylor found the end zone a third time on a 48-yard rush to account for three of the Lions' scores in the win. David Salmon completed 15-28 passes for 296 yards and three touchdown passes in the win. Craig Rucker caught eight passes for 186 yards and two touchdown receptions. Malik Prescott rushed 18 times for 85 yards and one score. Preston Lockwood led MHU with a game high 15 tackles followed by Tray Smith with nine stops (7 solo), a pass break-up and a forced fumble. Jerjuan Edwards and Andrew Wilkins added seven tackles apiece. Wilkins tallied three pass break-ups. The Lions accumulated 516 yards of total offense in the win, 359 in the air. Mars Hill, now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, will play at Catawba on Saturday, September 23. The game will be aired on ESPN3. Follow the link on the Lions' website to watch the game. Men's Soccer: The Lions went 1-0-1 to kick off conference play this week. Following a 0-0 draw against Carson-Newman Wednesday night, Derek Kaple's first career goal ended the four game winless streak for Mars Hill against Catawba on Saturday, September 16. The Lions came away with a 1-0 victory.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill went 0-2 during the week that saw the opening of conference play. Wednesday, against Carson-Newman, Jackie Rivas scored the lone goal in a 5-1 loss. It was her first goal as a Lion. Saturday evening saw the Lions travel to Catawba and falling by a score of 4-0 to the host Indians.
Men's Tennis: The Lions opened up their season on the road against Montreat College and fell, 6-3, with victories coming from Alberto Ortiz and Fernando Neto in their doubles match, as well as their respective singles matches.
Volleyball: Mars Hill dropped another conference contest against visiting Catawba College Friday evening. The Lions were downed in four sets. Rebecca Butler had an outstanding game offensively and defensively with 11 kills and 32 digs. Lauren Hochstetler led the team with 14 kills. Maddie Spurgeon tied Butler's offensive output and Sally Anne Johnson reeled off her fifth straight game with 10 or more kills.
