Athletic Highlights: September 25 – October 2, 2017
Football: The Lions lost in overtime 56-49 to Limestone in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday afternoon. David Salmon threw for 406 yards completing 24-41 passes and four touchdowns. Keshaun Taylor caught eight passes for 190 yards and two scores. Craig Rucker pulled down five receptions for 86 yards. Malik Prescott rushed 23 times for 69 yards and one touchdown. Anthony Phillips recorded 10 tackles (6 solo) and a pass break-up. Tray Smith tallied nine tackles (6 solo) and a tackle-for-loss. Earl Adams added six tackles, two-for-loss and a pair of quarterback hurries. The Lions accumulated 492 yards of total offense in the contest. Unfortunately, the Lions turned the ball over twice which directly led to 10 points for the Saints. Tanner Fox was a perfect 7-for-7 in PAT kick attempts for the Lions on the afternoon. Salmon leads the SAC in passing yards per game (269.8) ... Preston Lockwood leads the SAC in tackles per game (8.4) ... Taylor leads the SAC in receiving yards per game (123.0) ... As a team, MHU leads the SAC in passing yards, passing yards per game and passing touchdowns.
Men's Soccer: The Lions picked up their second conference victory with a 2-1 win over Coker Wednesday night. Freshman Tatum Cartner scored his first career goal and sophomore Joakim Lien booted in the game-winning goal for his first of the season. The Lions currently sit third in the SAC with a 3-4-1 (2-1-1 SAC) record.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill snapped a five-game winless streak with a 2-0 win over Coker Wednesday evening. Aleonya Hunter and Breona Tate were credited with the goals and Kaitlyn Danglemaier picked up her first shutout victory of the 2017 season.
Men's Golf: Harry Butler medaled for the second straight event, coming away with the victory at the Bob Dibble Classic in dramatic fashion. Butler sunk a birdie putt to secure his second win of the year in the ninth playoff hole. The Lions finished second overall.
Men's Tennis: Mars Hill lost to Union, 8-1, Saturday afternoon. The team of Ben Reid and Kyrel Trim won their doubles' contest, 8-2.
Women's Tennis: The Lions dropped both contests against Converse and Union this past week by scores of 7-2 and 9-0, respectively. Jasha Geerdink and Sophia Pelaez had the two singles victories against the Valkyries.
Men's Cross Country: Brandon Beard led the Lions to a seventh place finish at the Royals XC Classic on Friday. Beard turned in an average mile time of 5:09, while the Lions averaged a total of 26:10 per runner. The meet hosted 22 teams.
Women's Cross Country: Two Mars Hill Lions ran their personal best times at the Royals XC Classic Friday afternoon. Nyla Feeney ran an overall time of 19:57 as Samantha Burns turned in a run of 27:29. The Lions placed 22 out of 25 teams.
Volleyball: Mars Hill snapped their eight-game losing streak and picked up two key conference wins against Coker on Friday evening, sweeping the contest 3-0 and continued their momentum Saturday evening with an exciting, hard-fought four-set win over Newberry. The win over the Cobras marked head coach Tony Fontanelle's 150th victory at Mars Hill and served as the first conference and home win of the year. Maddie Spurgeon and Sally Anne Johnson led the Lions attack with 24 and 20 kills, respectively.
