Athletic Highlights: October 1 – October 8, 2017
Football: The Lions fell at SAC rival Tusculum 28-24 in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday night at Pioneer Field. Mars Hill fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the league. Elijah Jett rushed 21 times for 106 yards and one score averaging 5.0 yards per carry. David Salmon threw for 191 yards completing 14-34 passes. Keshaun Taylor recorded six receptions for 74 yards and added four kickoff returns for 65 yards. Andreas Hill led all tacklers with 10 stops (5 solo). He added a tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble. Chris Leamon added nine tackles (4 solo), three-for-loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Jeremy Middleton tallied seven tackles, a forced fumble, a pass break-up and an interception.
Men's Soccer: Mars Hill split their two South Atlantic Conference matchups, dropping a 2-0 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne, but bouncing back for a 1-0 win over Queens. Ben Lucas made seven saves in the loss, but bounced back with a five save shutout bid against the Royals. Joakim Lien scored the lone goal for the Lions. The strike was his second of the season and second game-winning goal of the year. The Lions currently hold a two-point lead over Lincoln Memorial for third in the conference.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill was shutout in both contests against Lenoir-Rhyne and Queens, 2-0 and 3-0, respectively. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Danglemaier made 20 saves over the two matches.
Men's Golf: The Mars Hill men's golf team finished 14th at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate. Harry Butler was the top finisher for the Lions, shooting a +6 and finishing the tournament tied for 26th. Callum Ritchie ended the tournament one shot behind Butler and tied for 32nd.
Men's Tennis: Mars Hill fell in both contests against King and North Greenville, 7-2 and 8-1, respectively. Ben Reid and Pedro Pinassi were victorious in their singles contests against the Tornado. Kyrel Trim picked up his second singles victory against North Greenville.
Women's Tennis: The Lions split their two contests against King and North Greenville. Mars Hill came away with a dominating 6-1 victory over King. Jasha Geerdink, Sophia Pelaez, Dani Potts and Hannah Hill all won their respective singles and doubles matches. The Lions came up short against North Greenville, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. Geerdink picked up the singles victory and the Lions won a doubles contest by default.
Volleyball: The Lions picked up a key SAC victory on the road against Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday evening in four sets. Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions to their third straight win with a game-high 16 kills. She also added 15 digs, three aces and one assist. The winning streak came to an end at the hands of Anderson on Saturday afternoon as the Lions were swept in three sets. Maddie Spurgeon led the offense with eight kills and Abby King had 12 assists, extending her streak of 10 or more to four straight games.
