Athletic Highlights: August 27 – September 3, 2018
Football: Mars Hill was defeated by East Tennessee State, 28-7, Saturday evening in their 2018 season opener. Austin Brown went 17-of-25 for 143 yards and one touchdown. Craig Rucker caught 10 passes for 136 yards and the lone score for the Lions. Chris Ferdinand had seven tackles and a recovered fumble in his first game since 2016 while Malcolm Means, in his first game for the Lions, also had seven tackles.
Men's Soccer: The Lions opened up their season 2-0, defeating Shorter in a double overtime thriller and downing Emmanuel, both by scores of 2-1. In the season opener versus the Hawks, Sam Roe and Jordan Lennon tallied for the Lions while freshman goalkeeper Brian Salzman made two clutch saves in the first overtime period, including one on a penalty kick. In the Sunday matinee game, Sebastian Bertilsson and Joakim Lien were the Lions' goal scorers.
Women's Soccer: Sanne Martinsen shined in her collegiate debut Thursday evening, scoring both of Mars Hill's goals in their 2-1 win over USC Aiken. On Saturday evening, the Lions were shutout by Lander by a score of 3-0.
Cross Country: The men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, North Carolina over the weekend. The women finished eighth out of nine teams and Nyla Feeney turned in a personal best time of 19:40.61. The men's team placed ninth out of ten teams with Nick Resor turning in the best Mars Hill time of 28:31.98.
Volleyball: The Lions went 3-1 at the SAC Regional Crossover held on Friday and Saturday. Mars Hill won their first game against Chowan, 3-1, but were later defeated by Emmanuel by the same score. On Saturday, the Lions defeated both Belmont Abbey and King by scores of 3-1. Sally Anne Johnson led the Lions offensively with 55 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Ully Martins picked up a team-high 87 digs through the four contests.
