Athletic Highlights: November 5 – November 12, 2018
Football: The Mars Hill football team concluded the 2018 season with a thrilling 21-17 win over Newberry on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Meares Stadium. The contest came down to a goal line stand with one second left in regulation. Austin Brown threw for 166 yards and one touchdown. Christopher Roberts and Jaques Buchannon each had a rushing touchdown. Tyler Ferguson caught the lone Brown touchdown pass. Johnathan Phillips and Tray Smith led the Lions defensively with 10 tackles while Cameron Wrice hauled down two interceptions and added six tackles.
Men's Basketball: The Lions opened up their 2018-19 season with an exhibition game against Appalachian State on Tuesday night. Their regular season began with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Limestone on Friday night by a score of 92-88 and a regulation loss to Belmont Abbey the following day, falling 70-53. Ja'Shawn Brooks led the Lions offensively in both contests, collecting 43 points and eight assists over the two games.
Women's Basketball: Mars Hill dropped their season opening contest against Converse by a score of 74-55. Brooke Vilcinskas had a team-high 11 points, followed by Mariah Johnson's 10 on the day. Tatum Boggs, Fajhenee Bradford and Gabby Gianikos each had nine points.
Volleyball: Mars Hill wrapped up their 2018 campaign with a 3-1 loss to Anderson in the South Atlantic Conference quarterfinals. Maddie Spurgeon led the Lions with 13 kills while Elizabeth Kaeser had a game-high six blocks. The Lions finished the year with a 16-13 record.
