Baseball Loses Double-Header at Coker
The Lions’ baseball team lost a double-header at Coker College Saturday afternoon at Tom J. New Field by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Lions' baseball team lost a double-header at Coker College Saturday afternoon at Tom J. New Field by scores of 6-4 and 6-2. Mars Hill fell to 5-9 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Cobras improved to 7-3 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.
Game 1: Coker 6, Mars Hill 4
Evan Rogers led MHU going 3-4 at the plate with an RBI. Dustin Jones went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Caleb Edwards took the loss (2-1) for MHU on the mound.
Sammy Song and Jarren Donato led Coker with two hits and two RBI apiece in the game. Matt Prosser picked up the win (3-0) on the mound pitching seven innings while Andrew Goot recorded the save (1) throwing the final two innings.
The Cobras got on the board in the second inning after Donato singled to plate Chase Spivey. Spivey reached on a single through the right side and then stole second to get into scoring position. Phillip Carroll drove in Jacob Rand on a sacrifice fly in the third frame to tie the contest at 1-all. Adam Daniel singled in the Lions' fourth at-bat to drive in Dalton Eisenbath and give MHU a 2-1 lead.
Coker then exploded for four runs on five hits and one Lion miscue in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take the lead for good (5-2). Song had a two-RBI double in the at-bat.
The teams traded single runs in the fifth inning before MHU ended the scoring in the top of the seventh when Dustin Jones scored on a passed ball.
Game 2: Coker 6, Mars Hill 2
In game two, Evan Rogers and Andy Runion each recorded a hit and a run scored to pace the Lions at the plate. Dalton Eisenbath added a double. Dale Innes threw a complete game suffering his first loss on the year (2-1).
Sammy Song went 1-2 with two-RBI to lead Coker offensively. Fico Kondla followed going 2-3 with one RBI. Alex Hernandez threw a complete game scattering five hits allowing two runs to pick up his first win (1-2) on the year.
Evan Rogers and Tommy Scala had RBI singles in the third inning to give MHU a 2-0 advantage in the night cap. Coker put the game away in the fifth inning scoring three runs on one hit and an error. Coker scored three more runs in the sixth stanza on one hit to make the final tally 6-2 in favor of the Cobras.
The teams will complete the three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Tom J. New Field.
