Baseball Wins Series Opener against Pioneers
Strong pitching led Mars Hill to a 4-3 victory over SAC rival Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – Strong pitching led Mars Hill to a 4-3 victory over SAC rival Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Henderson Field. The Lions improved to 17-27 overall and 10-15 in the SAC. The Pioneers fell to 26-18 on the season and 14-13 in the league.
Caleb Edwards pitched 7.0 innings allowing just five hits and one run to lead MHU to victory. Edwards struck out nine batters. Hunter Boydston picked up his third save on the year throwing the final two innings. Dalton Eisenbath went 2-4 with a homerun and two RBI to lead the Lions at the plate. Adam Daniel went 2-3 while Evan Rogers went 1-4 with a homerun.
Andrew Bowerman led Tusculum going 2-5 with a run scored. Cody Andreychuk was 1-1 with a double. Jalen Shuffler was also 1-1 with a double and added a run scored. McKenly Berry took the loss (2-2) on the mound for the Pioneers.
Vinny Ferrara scored on a fielder's choice in the top half of the second inning to put the Pioneers ahead, 1-0. A single by Andy Runion in the bottom half of the inning scored Jacob Rand and tied the contest at 1-1.
Evan Rogers led the Lions' third at-bat off with a solo homerun to give MHU a 2-1 advantage. Eisenbath put the game away hitting a two-run homerun in the seventh frame to extend the Lions' lead to 4-1. Tommy Scala scored on the long ball after reaching base on a bunt single.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the ninth inning on three hits and one Lion error but Boydston was able to end the game on a strikeout with the tying run on first base.
The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow with a double-header. The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m. It will also be the Lions' senior day.
