Baseball Wins Season Opener
The Lions baseball team defeated Limestone, 6-5 in both teams season opener Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions baseball team defeated Limestone, 6-5 in both teams season opener Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field.
Brett Brubaker led the Lions at the plate going 3-5 with a pair of doubles and a RBI. Devin Mangum followed going 1-4 with a triple and four RBI. Blaine Farrell picked up the win pitching the sixth inning in relief. Zac Brown threw the final inning for Mars Hill to obtain his first save on the year.
Brennan Strovink led the Saints at the plate going 3-4 with a homerun and two RBI. Garrett Lowery followed going 1-3 with a homerun and also posted two RBI. Charlie Richardson suffered the loss on the mound for Limestone.
A two out, two-run homerun by Strovink gave the Saints a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat. Mars Hill took a 3-2 advantage in the second inning when Mangum cleared the bases on a triple to right field.
Lowery's two-run homer in the fourth frame gave Saints a 4-3 lead. Mars Hill put the game away in the sixth inning scoring three runs on two hits and one Limestone error to enjoy a 6-3 lead. Mangum hit a sacrifice fly to account for one of the runs and Brubaker singled to right-center to plate another one of the runs. Travis Owens scored the first run of the inning on a Saint throwing error.
Mars Hill walked a run in during the seventh inning but that was as close as the Saints would get as the Lions' pitching and defense held strong the remainder of the game to make the final tally 6-5 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will play at Georgia Southwestern this weekend. The teams will meet for a double-header at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then play a single game on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
