Baseball Splits with St. Thomas Aquinas
The Lions’ baseball team split a double-header against St. Thomas Aquinas Monday afternoon at Henderson Field.

St. Thomas Aquinas
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' baseball team split a double-header against St. Thomas Aquinas Monday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill won the first game in extra innings (11), 4-3 and then lost the nightcap, 6-2. MHU is now 13-12 on the season while the Spartans took their season mark to 7-6.
Game 1: MHU 4, STAC 3 (11 innings)
Travis Owens, Gray McCurry and Devin Mangum led the Lions offensively with two hits apiece. Owens and Mangum added an RBI apiece. Fausto Turro picked up the win (1-0) throwing the final three innings in relief. He allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out one batter.
Mark Shkrelja and Cris Ruiz led the Spartans with two hits apiece. Shkrelja added a double and an RBI. George Navendal suffered the loss pitching one inning in relief.
The Spartans scored two runs in the fourth inning on two hits and two Lion errors. Shkrelja had an RBI single in the at-bat. Owens doubled to right-center field in the bottom of the inning to plate Brett Brubaker and cut the Lions deficit to 2-1.
The Lions scored two runs in the fifth frame highlighted by a RBI triple from Devon Mangum. The Spartans tied the contest in the top of the seventh inning on one hit and one MHU miscue.
After Harrison reached base on a walk and then moved to second base on a wild pitch, he was advanced to third base on a balk. Lance Edwards then singled up the middle top send Harrison home for the game winning score.
Game 2: STAC 6, MHU 2
Cody Cline went 2-3 with a double to pace the Lions at the plate. Matt Honeycutt followed going 1-3 with an RBI. Blaine Farrell took the loss (2-3) pitching the first five innings. He allowed only two earned runs.
Cline scored on a fielder's choice to give MHU a 1-0 advantage. The Spartans sealed the win in the fifth inning scoring five runs on four hits and three Lion errors. St. Thomas Aquinas added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Honeycutt accounted for the Lions' final run in the bottom half of the inning when he singles to plate Cline. Anthony Morris threw the final inning to hold the Lions at bay at leave MHU with a split.
Mars Hill will play at Anderson in a South Atlantic Conference three-game series this weekend. The teams will meet for a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and then play a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m.
