Baseball Falls at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – Mars Hill lost game one to Anderson 5-3 in the first of a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series held at Memorial Stadium. The Lions evened their overall record to 13-13 and dropped to 3-4 in the league. The Trojans improved to 7-18 on the year, 3-7 in the SAC.
Christian Stampler went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Daniel Vitello and Travis Owens tallied a hit and an RBI apiece. Brett Brubaker was 1-3 with a stolen base. Zac Brown (1-3) suffered the loss for MHU on the mound pitching 7.2 innings. He struck out 11 batters in the contest.
William Thomas led Anderson at the plate going 2-4 with three RBI while Dillon Carpenter followed going 2-4 with a homerun and two RBI. Evan Small picked up the win (1-0) throwing the final two innings in relief.
Anderson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning highlighted by a two-run homerun by Carpenter. The Lions tied the contest at 3-all in the top of the eighth inning after Vitello singled to drive in Devin Mangum and then Stampler singled to right field to plate Hunter Merrill. Travis Owens then sent Vitello home on a fielder's choice.
Thomas hit a two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom half of the eighth inning to account for the game winning score. Small was able to hold the Lions' bats at bay in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Trojans.
The team will conclude the three-game series tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
