Baseball Drops 6-4 Decision at Southern Wesleyan
The Lions’ baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday evening at Connor Field.
CENTRAL, S.C. – The Lions' baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday evening at Connor Field. Mars Hill fell to 1-3 on the year while the Warriors improved to 2-2 on the season.
Matt Honeycutt led the Lions offensively going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Brett Brubaker and Gray McCurry also tallied two hits and one RBI apiece in the contest. Alan Kolb took the loss (1-1) pitching in relief.
Quinton Bent led SWU going 1-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI. Trey Matthews was 1-for-2 with a homerun and two RBI. Daniel Singleton picked up the win throwing two innings in relief.
Honeycutt doubled in the Lions' first at-bat to drive in McCurry and Brubaker and give Mars Hill a 2-0 lead. Matthews' homer in the third frame knotted the contest at 2-all.
SWU put the game away in the seventh inning scoring four runs on the same number of hits. Bent hit a three-run homerun in the at-bat to highlight the inning.
Mars Hill scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make the final tally 6-4 in favor of the hosts. Travis Owens singled to score Brubaker in the eighth and then Lance Edwards scored on a Warrior error in the ninth inning.
Mars Hill will play a three-game series at Emmanuel this weekend. The team will meet for a double-header at 12 p.m. on Saturday and then complete the series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
