Baseball Wins Series Opener at Carson-Newman
The Lions defeated Carson-Newman 8-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lions defeated Carson-Newman 8-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex. Mars Hill improved to 15-20-1 overall and 7-12 in the league. The Eagles dropped to 20-16 on the season, 11-8 in the SAC.
Brett Brubaker and Matt Honeycutt recorded three hits and one homerun apiece to lead the Lions at the plate. Christian Stampler had a homerun and three RBI. Shomarii Thomas and Brendan Emery posted two hits in the win. Alec Bivins threw eight innings scattering the same number of hits and allowed four runs to pick up the win (3-2) on the mound for the Lions. He struck out five batters.
Brett Langhorne, Ethan Goforth and Tyler Thompson tallied two hits apiece to pace the Eagles at the plate. Dillon Cate suffered the loss (4-2) on the mound for C-N.
The Eagles scored two runs in each of the first two innings of play to lead 4-0 before the Lions finally got on the board in the fourth inning after Brubaker hit a solo homerun to right field. Mars Hill took the lead for good in the fifth inning scoring five runs on four hits and one C-N error. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homerun by Stampler.
The Lions added single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to seal the win. Thomas scored on a passed ball in the sixth and then Honeycutt homered in the seventh to end the scoring for the Lions.
Colby Morgan hit a solo homerun for the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final tally 8-5 in favor of the visitors.
The team will conclude the SAC three-game series on Sunday. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
