Baseball Sweeps Brevard
Mars Hill’s baseball team swept Brevard in double-header baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill has won 12 of their last 13 games.
MARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill's baseball team swept Brevard in double-header baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field. The Lions won the first game 16-6 and then won the nightcap 10-3. The Lions improved to 19-21-1 overall while the Tornados fell to 6-24 on the season.
Game 1: Mars Hill 16, Brevard 6
Christian Stampler went 2-for-5 at the plate with five RBI to lead the Lions' offensive attack in the first contest. Austin Treadway had a double and three RBI while Daniel Vitello hit a two-run homerun. Cameron Howell picked up his second win (2-0) on the mound allowing just three hits and striking out the same number of batters. Alan Kolb picked up his first save on the year throwing the final three innings of the game.
Jonte Wilkes was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI. Drake Black got the loss (2-9) for the Tornados on the mound.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in their first at-bat on two hits highlighted by a two-RBI single by Stampler. Cline and Treadway accounted for the other RBI's in the inning.
After Mars Hill scored two more runs in the second inning, the Lions exploded for eight runs on four hits and two Tornado errors in the third frame to extend their advantage to 14-0. Treadway had another two-RBI single and Treadway added a two-RBI double in the at-bat.
Brevard got on the board in the fourth inning scoring three runs on three hits and one Lion miscue. The Tornados added three more runs in the fifth inning to plate six total runs in the game.
Mars Hill tallied two insurance runs in the sixth inning off a two-run homerun by Vitello to make the final score 16-6 in favor of the hosts.
Game 2: Mars Hill 10, Brevard 3
Gray McCurry went 2-for-3 in game two with a homerun and two RBI. Stampler added two hits, a triple and a pair of RBI. Matt Honeycutt recorded two hits, a double and a RBI. Adam Plouffe was 2-for-3 with a double. Bryson Bailey threw six innings scattering five hits and allowing only one run to bring his season record on the mound to 4-1.
Ryan Roon went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Tornados. Tyler Timms took the loss (2-5) on the mound for Brevard.
Stampler started the scoring for the Lions hitting a single to left-center field to drive in Harrison Keslar in the second inning. The Lions scored three runs in the third inning to go ahead 4-0. The at-bat was highlighted by a two-run homerun from McCurry.
Mars Hill extended their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning when Honeycutt doubled down the left field line to drive in Keslar and then Stampler tripled to send Honeycutt home before he scored on the same play after an overthrow to third base.
Brendan Emery tripled to center field in the fifth frame to plate Adam Plouffe before Brevard finally scored two runs in the sixth inning on two hits and one Lion error. The Lions added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning to end their scoring on the day. Plouffe doubled to drive in McCurry and then Kameron Reynolds scored from third on a wild pitch. The tornados added a single run in the seventh to make the final score 10-3 to give the Lions the double-header sweep.
Mars Hill has won 12 of their last 13 games and will host Anderson in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and then meet for a double-header on Saturday at 12 p.m.
