Baseball places three on All-SAC teams
Three members of the Mars Hill baseball team earned 2018 All-South Atlantic Conference honors, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Three members of the Mars Hill baseball team earned 2018 All-South Atlantic Conference honors, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon. Catcher Matt Honeycutt and third baseman Christian Stampler earned All-SAC First Team Honors and starting pitcher Zac Brown earned a spot on the All-SAC Second Team.
Honeycutt, a native of China Grove, North Carolina, led the Lions with a career-year. Honeycutt, a junior, had 69 hits including 15 homeruns and 14 doubles while driving in 49 RBI. He batted .399, which was good for third in the conference, with an on-base percentage of .493 and slugging percentage of .751 while playing in all 48 games of the 2018 season. He was second in total bases with 130 on the year.
Honeycutt was named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Regional and National Player of the Week in the first week of April. In six games, Honeycutt batted .667 with six home runs and 14 RBI. He posted a 1.571 slugging percentage and .724 on-base percentage.
Stampler, a senior from Davie, Florida, tied Honeycutt for team lead in games played (48) and RBI (49). Stampler led the team and conference with 18 home runs on the year. The mark placed him second in Mars Hill history for most home runs in an individual season.
Stampler placed fifth in total bases with 123 and, along with Honeycutt, was tied for fourth in the conference with 30 extra base hits. He placed second behind teammate Travis Owens in most times hit by a pitch with 21 and finished his career as the leader in the category with 49 over his four years.
Brown, a senior from Albemarle, North Carolina, posted a record of 4-3 with three complete games in 2018. He led the Lions with a 3.93 ERA and 62 strikeouts. Brown ranked fifth in the SAC in both categories. He won three straight games between March 31 and April 14, including a one-hit performance on April 8th in a 16-0 win over Carson-Newman. In those three games, Brown struck out 21 batters.
Brown finishes his career for the Lions placing first in innings pitched (259.2), strikeouts (219), pitching decisions (33) and pickoffs (21). He ranks second in wins (19) and win-loss percentage (.594).
