Honeycutt named to D2CCA All-Southeast Region First Team
Mars Hill junior catcher Matt Honeycutt was selected to the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Baseball All-Southeast Region First Team, as announced Friday evening. The First Team selection will move him to the All-America ballot.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The votes have been counted and, reflecting the season, there is incredible balance on the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Baseball All-Southeast Region team.
Sixteen student-athletes from 10 different schools earned All-Southeast Region First Team distinction this season.
Georgia College's Charlie Hecht was named Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year, while Player of the Year honors went to his teammate Logan Mattix. Hecht is 11-1 with a 2.81 ERA and 125 strikeouts over 102 2/3 innings this season. Mattix, an outfielder, is hitting .400 this season adding nine home runs, 67 RBIs and 62 runs scored.
Joining these two on the first team were: catcher Matt Honeycutt from Mars Hill University, first baseman Chance Bowden from Catawba College, second baseman Seth Hartings, third baseman Trey Jacobs, outfielder Luke Jackson and designated hitter Connor Grainger from UNC Pembroke, shortstop Colin Allman from Newberry College, outfielder Connor Grant and starting pitcher Tucker Burgess from North Greenville University, starting pitcher Ethan Elliott from Lincoln Memorial University, starting pitcher Kolton Ingram from Columbus State University, relief pitcher Zach Vennaro from the University of Mount Olive, utility/pitcher Charles Hall from Tusculum College and utility Nate Schmal from Georgia College.
The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) had 16 honorees on the two teams, while the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) had 11 and the Conference Carolinas six. The first team selections will move on to the All-America ballot.
The D2CCA All-America programs honor student-athletes in Division II athletic programs. The mission of the CCA is to encourage and promote Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The voting, nomination and calculations are all conducted by the school's sports information directors. The teams are voted on by the members of D2SIDA, NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors Association.
