Lions even season series with 15-4 win over SWU

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (12-15) defeated Southern Wesleyan (12-15) in non-conference play by a score of 15-4 to even the season series Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field.
The Lions scored 15 unanswered runs after finding themselves down 4-0 in the first inning.
Julio Justo's two-run double provided the Warriors the early 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third, Quinton Bent's groundout to second allowed Devin Patrick to score the Warriors' third run of the frame. Tanner Glass capped off the inning with a RBI single to center field to plate Justo.
Mars Hill cut the Warrirors' lead in half with a two-run home run off of the bat of Scottie Lee. Adam Plouffe's two-run single knotted the game at four, allowing Austin Purser and Matt Honeycutt to score. The Lions took the lead off of Cody Cline's two-run single.
The Lions added five more runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Daniel Vitello's two-run single through the right side of the infield. In the bottom of the fourth, following Cline's RBI single, Vitello picked up his third RBI of the game with a groundout that allowed Cline to score.
Honeycutt's two-run blast over the scoreboard in left field plated Mars Hill's 15th run of the game for his fifth of the season.
Both Cline and Honeycutt recorded a game-high three hits while Cline and Vitello led all players with three RBI apiece.
Aaron Wimpey allowed 10 runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings pitched in the loss. Ryan Steffens threw five shutout innings, striking out five and allowing one hit for the win.
The Lions return to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, March 22nd when they host Wingate. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Henderson Field.
