Lions fall short in series opener versus St. Leo

ST. LEO, Fla. - The Mars Hill baseball team (0-2) was defeated by St. Leo (1-0) in the series opener Friday night by a score of 3-2.
Tied at two entering the bottom of the ninth, the St. Leo Lions walked the game off with a RBI single off the bat of Yazael Nunez, plating Zach Benson for the game-winning run.
St. Leo went up 2-0 after the first inning of play. They held Mars Hill scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.
Jordan Lathe put the Lions on the board with his first home run of the season. He tied the game in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly that plated Zach Weaver, recording his second RBI of the game.
Nunez led St. Leo with two hits while the duo of Weaver and Alex Naran each recorded two hits for Mars Hill.
Jared Beck threw five strong innings for St. Leo in the no decision, striking out eight and allowing just one run on two hits. Andy Booth earned the win, striking out two in one inning and allowing one hit.
Andrew Hazell threw 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five. Tristan Camp was credited with the loss, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing one run on four hits.
The teams return to field tomorrow for games two and three of their four-game series. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
