Lions drop series opener versus Saint Michael's

MARS HIL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (9-15) was defeated by Saint Michael's (2-9) by a score of 7-6 in non-conference play Friday night.
The Purple Knights used a four-run seventh inning to take the lead late. A pair of RBI singles saw Saint Michael's go up 6-5 after the seventh. In the eighth, Evan Balian's RBI single added an insurance, and eventual, game-winning run.
Zach Weaver, in the bottom of the eighth, cut the deficit to one with his second home run of the game.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first as Jaden James plated two with a single through the right side of the infield. In the third, Trey Putnam reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Carter Potts to score. Weaver hit his first home run of the game in the fourth, a solo shot to center field. Potts, later in the frame, plated Elec Yount with a RBI double.
Putnam led the Lions with three hits while Weaver and James led all players with two RBI apiece. Weaver and Yount also added two hits.
Trent Balian was credited with the win, throwing 3.1, allowing five hits. Ryan Canty picked up the save, allowing one run on three hits in 2.1 innings.
The Lions wrap up the non-conference series on Saturday, March 16.
