Four Lions Named to Hansen All-America Team
Four Mars Hill football players were named to the 2013 NCAA Division II Don Hansen All-America team.
MARS HILL, N.C.-Four Mars Hill football players were named to the 2013 NCAA Division II Don Hansen All-America team. Junior running back Shaikel Davis and junior wide receiver Dimitri Holmes earned spots on the third team offense, with senior linebacker Sammy Siasia claiming a spot with the third team defense. In addition, senior defensive end Troy Harris was an All-America honorable mention.
Davis, Holmes and Harris were All-Super Region II first team selections, while Saisia was an All-Super Region II second team selection.
Davis, an All-SAC selection in 2013, led the league in rushing yards and rushing yards per game despite missing the last game of the season due to injury. Davis, a Daktronics All-Region team member in 2012, finished 13th in the NCAA in total rushing yards per game and 18th in total rushing yards.
Holmes' selection caps a record-setting year. Holmes' 1,591 receiving yards last season is the second-highest in SAC history and his 3,449 career receiving yards puts him in third place in the SAC record books. In addition to setting the school record for season and career receiving yards, Holmes caught a school record 15 touchdowns and is the record holder with 32 career touchdown receptions.
Siasia led the SAC with 155 tackles, putting him in second place among all Division II players. He also led the league with 64 solo tackles. Siasia was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week twice (October 21, November 18) and D2football.com Player of the Week once (November 19). He had double-digit tackles in 10 of his 11 games played in 2013.
Harris had a solid senior season in which he recorded 99 tackles (46 solo), eight sacks and a league-leading 20.5 tackles for loss. The 2012 SAC defensive Player of the year was an All-SAC first team selection in 2013. Prior to this season, Harris was named a Beyond Sports Network (BSN) Preseason All- American.
2013 Harlon Hill winner Franklin Quiteh of Bloomsburg (Pa.) was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Darius Allen of Colorado State-Pueblo, the 2013 Gene Upshaw Award winner, was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
The Don Hansen Division II All-America Team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
