BROOKFIELD, Ill. - Four Mars Hill football players have been named to the 2014 Don Hansen All-Super Region Two team. Senior wide receiver Dimitri Holmes and redshirt junior offensive lineman Denzell Goode earned spots on second team offense. Sophomore running back Jamel Harbison was named to third team offense while junior defensive lineman Christiaan Davis claimed a role on the third team defense.
Holmes was named the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year after he caught 50 passes for 782 yards and seven touchdowns with a league-leading 78.2 average yards per game. A threat in the return game, Holmes returned 22 kickoffs for 598 yards with two touchdowns with an average of 24.5 yards per return. At the conclusion of the 2014 season Holmes finds himself as the South Atlantic Conference record-holder in career receptions (267) and career receiving yards (4,231). The Don Hanson selection is the latest honor for Holmes in a season that saw him earn DAKTRONICS All-Region first team, Don Hanson All-Super Region Two second team and BSN All-Super Region II first team laurels.
Goode earned second team DAKTRONICS All-Region honors as well as second team BSN All-Super Region II accolades. He has been chosen to the All-SAC first team for the past two seasons. Goode was a key part of an offensive line that opened holes for Harbison and a passing attack that finished second in the league, averaging 215 yards per game.
Harbison, a BSN All-Super Region II honoree, ran for 1,204 yards on 227 carries with nine touchdowns. He earned AstroTurf Offensive Player of the Week honors on October 13 after running for 290 yards and three touchdowns against Brevard on October 11. Harbison was an All-SAC second team selection at running back.
Davis was named to the All-SAC second team after averaging 5.2 tackles and 7.5 tackles per loss in 10 games for Mars Hill in 2014. Davis finished the year with 52 tackles and two sacks for a loss of 18 yards.
Carson-Newman running back Andy Hibbett, a finalist for the 2014 Harlon Hill Trophy, was named the Super Region Two Offensive Player of the Year, while Lenoir-Rhyne linebacker Tanner Botts was selected the Defensive Player of the Year. North Carolina-Pembroke return specialist L.J. Strohman garnered Special Teams Player of the Year honors, while Fort Valley State wide receiver Drelon Freeman received Freshman of the Year honors. West Georgia head coach Will Hall, who guided the Wolves to a 12-3 record and a berth in the 2014 NCAA Division II National Semifinals, was named the Super Region Two Coach of the Year.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003. The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2014 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named in February.
