Mattox Named Academic All-American
Carl Mattox was named to the 2015 first team CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II football team
AUSTIN, Texas – Carl Mattox was named to the 2015 first team CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II football team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Head football coach Tim Clifton stated, "This is a great accomplishment for Carl. Not only is he an outstanding football player but he is a quality young man. Carl has great Christian values and impeccable character. We are very proud and honored to have Carl represent Mars Hill University on the CoSida Acdemic All-America Team."
Mattox, a 6-1, 190-pound, junior defensive back is from Athens, Ga. (Prince Avenue Christian) He has a 3.75 cumulative grade point average as a Business Administration major. On the field, Mattox was a 2015 second team All-South Atlantic Conference selection.
Mattox was fifth on the team with 60 tackles (41 solo) averaging 5.5 tackles per game. He recorded 2.5 tackles-for-loss, eight pass break-ups and one interception for a 69-yard return. His eight pass break-ups led the Lions' defense in that category.
Mattox helped lead Mars Hill to a 6-5 overall record and a 5-2 record in the SAC that placed them tied for second place in the league. Two of the Lions' losses were to NCAA Division I opponents. After started the 105 campaign 1-4, Mars Hill won five of their last six contests.
Mattox, a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, is only the third Academic All-American football player in Mars Hill's history as a NCAA Division II member. He joins defensive lineman Brent Taylor (1992) and offensive lineman Tyler Hodgson (2011).
