Men’s Basketball Loses to Newberry
Emile, Harris combine for 65 points in the game
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions lost to the Wolves of Newberry College 122-102 in SAC men's basketball action Wednesday night in Stanford Arena. Mars Hill fell to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. Newberry took their season record to 7-3 and a 2-1 mark in the conference.
Savad Garner and Quayshun Hawkins led the way with 32 points apiece in the win. Newberry shot the ball well, connecting on 58.1% (43-of-74) of its field goals, 50% (15-of-30) of its three-pointers and 70% (21-of-30) at the charity stripe.
Garner had a solid night in the low post, scoring on 14-of-16 shots for 32 points as well as eight rebounds, while Hawkins connected on 8-of-12 three-point attempts and made all eight of his free throws. He also had six rebounds and six assists.
The Wolves started shooting 68.4% (26-of-38) in the first half, including 11-of-17 (64.7%) from beyond the arc on the way to a 68-45 halftime lead.
Chris Reynolds did not attempt a field goal in the first half, but went 6-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line on the way to 17 points to go with seven rebounds. Also in double digits was Matt Dixon with 10 points.
For Mars Hill, two players cracked the 30 point barrier. The SAC' s leading scorer - Sammy Emile - had a game-high 33 points as well as nine rebounds, while Terrell Harris scored 32 points and pulled down 10 boards to record his second double-double of the season. Emile hit 13-14 free throw attempts.
Mars Hill hit 41.9% (32-77) from the floor, 19% (4-21) from behind the arc and 82.9% (34-41) from the foul line. The rebound battle was tied at 43-all.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Brevard College on Saturday. Tip-off is Stanford Arena is set for 4 p.m.
