BREVARD, N.C. – The Lions defeated Brevard in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Wednesday night at Boshamer Gymnasium, 92-84. Mars Hill improved to 7-19 overall and 5-16 in the SAC. Brevard fell to 4-21 on the season and 4-17 in the league.
Carter Wright recorded his career high 37 points in the win hitting a new school record nine 3-pointers and connecting on a perfect 10-10 performance from the foul line. He also tallied nine rebounds. The old school record of eight 3-pointers made in a game was set by Danny Sanders against Belmont Abbey on December 5, 2009. Isaiah Cuthbertson followed with a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. MHU out rebounded the Tornados, 53-35. Darius Moose led Brevard with 22 points while Trevon Shaw tallied 17 points and nine boards.
The first half was closely played with neither team holding more than a five point lead until Wright scored eight unanswered points to give the Lions a 39-30 lead heading into the locker room at the break.
The Lions started the second frame on an 11-0 run to take a 20-point advantage after Wright nailed a shot from behind the arc. Mars Hill would maintain a double-digit lead until the 5:40 mark when Alex Moe hit a 3-pointer to bring the Tornados within nine points (74-65). That was as close as the Tornados would get as MHU answered every offensive run Brevard would attempt down the stretch.
Mars Hill will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday as the Lions will host SAC foe Lenoir-Rhyne. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
