Men's Basketball Wins at Carson-Newman
The Lions defeated Carson-Newman 84-73 on the road in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Tuesday night. Patrick Monroe scored a career high as a Lion with 31 points hitting nine 3-pointers. The nine 3-pointers made set a new school record.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lions defeated Carson-Newman 84-73 on the road in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Tuesday night at Holt Fieldhouse. Mars Hill improved to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Eagles fell to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Patrick Monroe scored a career high as a Lion with 31 points hitting nine 3-pointers. The nine 3-pointers made set a new school record. The old record was held by Danny Sanders against Belmont Abbey on December 5, 2009. Monroe added a pair of rebounds, three assist and a steal. He was 10-21 from the floor and 2-2 at the foul line. Brandon McCarter followed with 14 points while Isaiah Cuthbertson added six points and a game high eight rebounds.
Jared Johnson and Carson Brooks led the Eagles scoring 17 and 15 points, respectively. Ryan Jones was the rebound leader for C-N with seven. MHU received 26 points off their bench.
Mars Hill jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 16:26 left in the first half after Patrick Monroe hit a shot from behind the arc. The Eagles then scored nine unanswered points to lead 11-8 with 14:07 left in the first frame when Jared Johnson hit a 3-pointer of his own. The Eagles went up six points (17-11) after Josh Rogers hit a shot in the lane at the 10:56 mark but the Lions fought back and went on a 18-8 run over the next five minutes of play to lead 29-25 (5:48) after Monroe hit another long-range jumper. An Andy Barnett 3-pointer put the Eagles ahead 37-34 with 58 ticks left in the first half before a Monroe tip-in and a Kevin Haynes layup gave the Lions a 38-37 lead going into the locker room at the intermission. The Lions out rebounded C-N, 21-12 in the first half. Bothe teams shot over 48-percent from the floor in the first stanza.
A 3-pointer by Monroe put the Lions up 46-41 with 18:11 left in the second half before the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to lead 47-46 (15:38) after Carson Brooks hit a shot at the foul line. The Lions answered out scoring C-N 23-15 over the next 11 minutes to take a 70-61 lead they would never relinquish. The Lions extended their lead to as many as 12 points (75-63) with 4:19 left in regulation after Monroe nailed another 3-pointer. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to seven points on four occasions down the stretch but the Lions held off the Eagles for an 84-73 victory.
The Lions will host Warren Wilson on Monday, December 1. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
