Lacrosse Beats Belmont Abbey, 15-5

MARS HILL, N.C. - The no. 11 Lions defeated Belmont Abbey College, 15-5 Sunday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 8-0 while the Crusaders fell to 2-3 on the season.
Taylor Thilo led Mars Hill's offensive attack scoring three goals and supplying his teammates with four assists. Cade Zulak added a goal and three assists while Jimmy McBride came off the bench to score two goals and add one assist. T.J. Cowx, Blake Mattinson and Dan Applebaum scored two goals apiece in the contest. Dylan Price played 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made 11 saves. Chris Cudmore had a game high eight ground balls in the win. Ryan Herrmann won 11-17 face-offs.
Dan Morrissey and Scotty Steele led the Crusaders with two goals apiece. MHC outshot the Crusaders, 37-24. The Lions won the ground ball battle, 35-26 and won 13-23 face-offs. Belmont Abbey was 1-3 on extra man opportunities while MHC was 0-1.
Cowx scored with 11:19 on the clock in the first frame and the Lions never trailed the Crusaders the rest of the way. MHC led 4-1 after the first quarter and 9-4 at the intermission. The Lions' defense was exceptional in the second half holding the Crusaders to only one goal. MHC won the third stanza 3-0 and the fourth quarter 3-1 to make the final score 15-5 in favor of the Lions.
MHC will travel to Florida over spring break and play DSC rivals Saint Leo and Tampa. The Lions will face Saint Leo on March 14 at 2 p.m. and then meet Tampa on March 17 at 1 p.m.
