Lacrosse Loses to Wheeling Jesuit
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' lacrosse team lost to Wheeling Jesuit University, 10-7 Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 8-3 overall while the Cardinals improved to 7-5 on the season.
Zach Tomkinson led MHC with three goals while Anthony Malcolm provided his teammates with the same number of assists. Dan Applebaum and Adam Zulak recorded a goal and an assist apiece. Patrick McMahon played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions and made 14 saves.
Sean Wright led WJU with three goals followed by Tyler Buchan with two goals and one assist. Jim LaPenna also played the entire contest in the net for the Cardinals and made 15 saves.
Wright scored 56 seconds into the game and the Cardinals never trailed again. WJU led 4-2 after the first quarter and took a 6-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Mars Hill outscored the Cardinals 2-1 in the third frame to trim the deficit to 7-5. The Lions came within one goal of WJU twice down the stretch. A goal from Tomkinson at the 14:44 mark of the fourth quarter made the score 7-6 and then a goal by Applebaum with 12:02 left in regulation took the score to 8-7 but that was as close as the Lions would get. Buchan and Bryce Brochu scored the last two goals of the contest to make final tally 10-7 in favor of the visitors.
Mars Hill will host Queens University on Saturday, April 13. Game time is set for a 2 p.m. start.
