Third Quarter Goals Power Pfeiffer Past Mars Hill
The Pfeiffer University Falcons used a third quarter surge to defeat the Mars Hill Lions 18-11 in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Meares Stadium and Ammons Family Athletic Center.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University Falcons used a third quarter surge to defeat the Mars Hill Lions 18-11 in men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Meares Stadium and Ammons Family Athletic Center. Mars Hill falls to 0-1 on the season, while Pfeiffer improves to 2-0.
Jimmy McBride, Adam Zulak, Ryan Sage and AJ Seip each scored two goals for Mars Hill. Anthony Malcolm and McBride had two assists each for the Lions. Patrick McMahon made 12 saves for Mars Hill in goal.
Pfeiffer was led by Steven Tilmon's four goals. Robert Hope and Spencer Allen each scored three goals. Hayden Kirk made eight saves for his second win of the season.
Mars Hill got on the board less than a minute into the game as Ryan Sage found the back of the net. Pfeiffer took a 2-1 lead, scoring two goals in 30 seconds before the Lions closed out the first quarter with four goals and a 6-2 lead.
The Lions held a 7-3 advantage with 12:18 to go in the opening half following a Connor Staub goal, but the Falcons scored four straight goals to tie the game at 7 with 3:12 remaining in the half. The Lions took a 9-7 lead with 1:15 to play in the half, with Pfeiffer finding the back of the net with 39 seconds remaining, giving Mars Hill a 9-8 halftime lead.
Pfeiffer scored seven goals in the third quarter to take control of the contest. Tilmon, Allen and Hope each scored two goals in the period. Mars Hill cut the Falcon advantage to 17-10 following an AJ Seip goal with 9:31 to play, but the Lions got no closer the rest of the game as they were outscored 3-2 in the final quarter.
Mars Hill will host Mercyhurst on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
