MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill lacrosse team lost 10-7 to No. 2 Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at Meares Stadium and Ammons Family Athletic Center. The Lions fall to 0-2 while Mercyhurst improves to 1-0 on the season.
Anthony Malcolm and Ryan Sage each scored two goals for the Lions. Jimmy McBride, Adam Zulak and Hunter Maggs each found the back of the net once. Patrick McMahon made 14 saves in goal.
Mercyhurst was led by Jake McAndrew and Brady Heseltine's two goals. Deven Alves, Trevor Vargo, John Plaskey and Mitch McAvoy also scored for the Lakers. Michael Grace made 11 saves in goal.
Mercyhurst scored the first three goals of the game before Mars Hill scored two goals in 49 seconds to cut the Laker lead to 3-2 with 3:06 to go in the opening quarter. Mercyhurst pushed their advantage to 5-3 before Maggs brought Mars Hill to within one, 5-4, with 3:55 to go in the first half. Maggs' goal would be the last of the half as the Lakers took a 5-4 lead into the break.
Mars Hill tied the game at five as McBride found the back of the net with 2:31 to play in the third quarter. McAvoy put the Lakers ahead for good, winning the ensuing faceoff and beating McMahon for a 6-5 Laker advantage. Mercyhurst scored three more goals before Sage cut the lead to 9-6 with 8:01 to play. Malcom's second goal of the game with six minutes to play brought the Lions to within two, 9-7, but Plaskey's goal with 3:21 to play gave Mercyhurst a 10-7 lead as the Lakers held on for the victory.
Mars Hill returns to action on Thursday afternoon, hosting Adelphi at 4 p.m.
