Lacrosse Beats Catawba, 14-8

MARS HILL, N.C. – A strong second quarter propelled Mars Hill over Catawba 14-8 in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Indians fell to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Anthony Malcolm led MHU with two goals and four assists. Adam Zulak followed with three goals and one assist while Jimmy McBride added four goals scored. Patrick McMahon played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions and made 15 saves.
Catawba outshot MHU, 32-31. Mars Hill won the ground ball battle, 41-28 and won 15-25 face-offs. Catawba was 1-5 in extra-man opportunities while the Lions were 1-1.
John Scheich led Catawba with two goals and the same number of assists. Adam Herbert also scored two goals while Steven Ridolfo and Josh Ready tallied a goal and an assist apiece. Pete Wesselman played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Indians and made five saves. Ryan Applegate played the final 15 minutes in the net for Catawba and made three saves and allowed three goals.
The teams traded single goals in the first quarter before Mars Hill exploded for six unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 7-1 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Malcolm scored what would later prove to be the game winning goal at the 12:05 mark of the second period.
The third and fourth quarters were played even. The teams scored four goals apiece in the third frame and three goals each in the fourth quarter to make the final tally, 14-8 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Brevard College on Wednesday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
