Lacrosse Falls to Florida Southern in Overtime

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Mars Hill fell to Florida Southern College 13-12 in overtime in lacrosse action Sunday afternoon in a neutral site contest at Hilton Head High School. The Lions took their season record to 3-5 while the Moccasins improved to 6-3 on the year.

Brian Pieklik led MHU with three goals and two assists followed by Anthony Malcolm and Ryan Sage who recorded three goals and one assist apiece. Pieklik and Sage tallied four ground balls each. Adam Zulak added a pair of goals and one assist. Patrick McMahon played 60:43 in goal for the Lions and made 13 saves.

Dane Sorensen led FSC with a game high six goals. He added three ground balls. Grant VanOverbeck followed with two goals and the same number of assists. Kevin Naslonski also notched two goals including the game winner 43 seconds into the first overtime period. Matt Lalli also played the entire contest in goal for the Moccasins and made 12 saves.

FSC outshot Mars Hill, 54-21. The Moccasins won the ground ball battle, 38-23. FSC won 16-29 face-offs. The Lions were 2-4 on extra-man opportunities while the Moccasins were 2-6.

The Lions jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter thanks to a pair of goals and an assist from Ryan Sage. MHU won the second frame 3-2 to take an 8-4 advantage into the locker room at the break. Sage added his third goal of the game in the second period.

The third quarter was a mirror of the second as MHU outscored FSC 3-2. Pieklik scored a goal and provided Anthony Malcolm's goal with the assist in the quarter.

Pieklik scored his third and final goal of the game 26 seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Lions 12-6 lead. It seemed as if MHU had the contest in control. Unfortunately, the Moccasins rallied to score six unanswered goals to tie the contest at 12-all with 3:10 left in regulation after Sorensen found the net on a pass from Cody Dyer.

Naslonski recorded the game winner 43 seconds into the extra period to lift FSC to victory. His goal was unassisted.

Mars Hill will return to action on Thursday, March 27. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
