Malcolm, Sage Turn Back Pioneers in Victory
Anthony Malcolm and Ryan Sage scored four goals each as the Mars Hill defeated Tusculum 13-3 in South Atlantic Conference Men’s Lacrosse action on Thursday night at Pioneer Field.
GREENEVILLE, TENN. - Anthony Malcolm and Ryan Sage scored four goals each as the Mars Hill defeated Tusculum 13-3 in South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse action on Thursday night at Pioneer Field. With the win, Mars Hill improves to 4-5 on the season and 3-1 in league play. Tusculum drops to 4-6 and 0-5 in the conference.
Mars Hill got the scoring started with a Sage goal at the 9:42 mark of the first quarter. The Pioneers tied the game on a David Fernandes goal with 6:56 to play in the quarter. Adam Zulak regained the lead for the Lions, scoring with 2:35 remaining. Malcolm and Jon Avery scored 15 seconds apart to give the Lions a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Jimmy McBride scored his 20th goal of the season at the 8:31 mark, with Sage scoring his second goal 35 seconds later for a 6-1 Lion lead. Cody Garcia scored with 14 seconds remaining to give Mars Hill a 7-1 advantage at halftime.
Sage gave the Lions an 8-1 lead with a goal at the 12:09 mark of the third quarter. Tusculum answered with a goal from Ben Boyd with 8:39 to play in a low-scoring third frame.
Mars Hill put some distance on the Pioneers with three goals from Malcolm and one each from Sage and Garcia to take a 13-2 lead with 5:21 to play. Tusculum completed the scoring with Fernandes' second goal of the night with 57 seconds to play.
In addition to Malcolm and Sage's four goal night, Garcia scored two goals with Zulak, McBride and Avery scoring one goal each. Brian Pieklik led the Lions with two assists.
Patrick McMahon faced 14 shots and made 11 saves for his fourth win of the season. John Perrucci faced25 shots and made 12 saves in the loss.
Mars Hill continues South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, traveling to Queens for a 2 p.m. start.
