MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill University men's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 62 seconds, taking a 15-13 South Atlantic Conference victory over visiting Wingate University Saturday at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium on the MHU campus. Anthony Malcolm scored the game-winner for the hosts.
Mars Hill is 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. Wingate is 6-6 overall and 1-5 in the SAC. The Lions step out of the league fray Wednesday, visiting Lees-McRae for a 4 p.m. start.
For Mars Hill, Ryan Sage had six goals, while Malcolm and Jimmy McBride had three goals each. For Wingate, Chase Watts had a career-high five goals. Bulldog Ryan Vogrig had three goals, while Austin Murphy contributed two scores and a team-best five assists.
Malcolm scored his game-winner with 1:02 to play, giving the hosts a 14-13 advantage. Mars Hill won the ensuing face-off, allowing Brian Pieklik to score an insurance goal 30 seconds later. Pieklik had two goals Saturday.
The Bulldogs trailed 13-8 entering the fourth quarter. Wingate responded with five unanswered goals, tying the contest 13-13 on a Watts score with 5:47 to play. Vogrig had three of the five goals during the Bulldogs' rally.
