Lacrosse Loses Season Opener in Overtime
The Lions’ lacrosse team lost their season opener at Pfeiffer Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field in overtime, 11-10.
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Lions' lacrosse team lost their season opener at Pfeiffer Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field in overtime, 11-10. Derek Thomas scored an unassisted goal at the 3:09 mark in the first sudden death overtime period to record the game winning goal. The Falcons improved to 2-0 on the year.
Anthony Malcom led the Lions with four goals followed by Ryan Sage with three. Sage added an assist while Brian Pieklik scored two goals and tallied one assist. Jack Grinewich played 60:51 in goal for MHU and made 16 saves.
Mike Triolo led the Falcons with three goals and one assist followed by Eddie Renaud with a pair of goals and one assist. Thomas added a couple of assists to go along with his game winning score. Joe Capstaff played the first half in the net for Pfeiffer and made four saves. Michaeal Moorehead played the final 30:51 in goal for the Falcons and made nine saves.
The teams traded three goals each in the first quarter before Pfeiffer edged the Lions 4-3 in the second period to take a 7-6 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Pfeiffer won the third quarter 2-1 and then the Lions went to work. MHU outscored Pfeiffer 3-1 in the final quarter to send the game into overtime. Pieklik, Sage and Malcom all scored unassisted goals in the fourth frame to tie the contest.
Pfeiffer outshot the Lions, 45-34 and won the ground ball battle, 30-28. MHU won 12-23 face-offs. The Lions were 1-5 on extra-man opportunities while the falcons were 1-3.
Mars Hill will host Florida Tech Monday afternoon in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
