Lacrosse Loses Season Opener

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' lacrosse team lost their season opener to Pfeiffer 13-9 Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Falcons improved to 2-0 on the season.
A.J. Seip led Mars Hill with three goals and one assist while Nathan Stewart added two goals and three assists. Ryan Kearney played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions and made seven saves.
Blade Garlow led Pfeiffer with four goals and one assist while Kyle Pauwels and Derek Thomas recorded two goals apiece. Mike Moorehead played the entire game in the net for the Falcons and made nine saves.
Team shots were knotted at 31-all. Mars Hill won the ground ball battle, 33-28 while the Falcons won 15-25 face-offs. Mars Hill was 4-5 on extra-man opportunities as opposed to Pfeiffer who had 2-3 successful man-up opportunities.
The first quarter was a low scoring affair as Pfeiffer led 2-1 going into the second period. The Falcons outscored Mars Hill 5-2 in the second quarter to enjoy a 7-3 advantage at the break.
The Falcons put the game away in the third stanza outscoring the Lions 4-1 to lead by seven goals (11-4) heading into the fourth frame. Mars Hill outscored the Falcons 5-2 in the fourth quarter but the comeback fell short as visiting Pfeiffer obtained the 13-9 victory.
Mars Hill will host the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, February 20. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
