Lacrosse Defeats Young Harris
The Lions’ lacrosse team defeated Young Harris 8-5 Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Dima Ferreira scored four goals in the win.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Young Harris 8-5 Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Dima Ferreira scored four goals in the win. Mars Hill improved to 4-6 overall while Young Harris fell to 6-8 on the season.
Following Ferreira, Hunter Maggs scored two goals and notched one assist. Connor Fernandes recorded one goal and one assist while Jake Trafton tallied a pair of assists. Ryan Kearney played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions and made 16 saves.
Alex Ashley led Young Harris with three goals and one assist while Bruce Silk added a goal and two assists. Mason King played the entire contest in the net for Young Harris and made 12 saves.
Maggs gave Mars Hill a 1-0 lead with 4:42 on the clock in the first quarter. The goal was unassisted. Young Harris then reeled off four unanswered goals to lead 4-1 with 6:42 left in the second quarter. Mars Hill fought back scoring three unanswered goal of their own. Fernandes scored at the 4:40 mark off a pass from Maggs and then Dima Ferreira scored two quick goals in the final two minutes of play in the first half to give the Lions a 4-3 advantage going into the break. Jake Trafton assisted Ferreira's first score and Kyle Dozzi assisted the second score.
The Lions outshot Young Harris 42-36 in the game and won the ground ball battle, 34-23. Young Harris won 12-17 face-offs. Mars Hill was 1-for-3 in extra-man opportunities while Young Harris scored 1-of-2 man-up goals.
Maggs extended the Lions lead to 5-3 scoring an unassisted goal with 10:05 left in the third stanza. A goal by Ashley trimmed Young Harris' deficit to a single goal (5-4) with 9:17 left in the third quarter. Ferreira added another unassisted goal with 1:33 left in the third period to give the Lions a 6-4 lead heading into the last quarter of play. Ferreira scored his fourth goal of the contest with 9:06 left in the fourth quarter to give the Lions a 7-4 advantage. The goal was assisted by Trafton. Ashley added his third goal of the game with 2:44 left in regulation to bring Young Harris within two goals (7-5) of the Lions but that was as close as they would get. Nathan Stewart added an insurance goal with 1:05 left in the contest to make the final tally 8-5 in favor of the hosts. Fernandes assisted the last goal of the contest.
Mars Hill out shot Young Harris 19-18 in the first half and edged Young Harris in ground balls, 20-14. Young Harris won 7-of-9 face-offs in the first half. There were no extra-man opportunities in the first two periods.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Tusculum on Saturday, April 15. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
