WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-5, 0-3 SAC) was defeated by No. 16 Wingate (6-1, 2-0 SAC) by a score of 18-4 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions found themselves down 5-0 after the opening 15 minutes of play. Bobby Padden scored twice while Ryan Ormerod netted one goal and collected an assist. Parker Beaudry scored the first goal for Mars Hill with 6:17 left in the first half to cut the deficit to four, however, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered to close out the half with a 9-1 lead. Alex Lierandi scored twice with under a minute to play.
Jake Trafton netted the lone Mars Hill goal in the third quarter just 1:27 into the half, but Wingate answered back with five straight to go up 14-2 at the end of three quarters. Ormerod collected three points (2g, 1a) in the frame.
Mars Hill struck twice in the final frame with goals from Connor Fernandes and Spencer Andrews, but were outscored 4-2 in the final 15 minutes to fall to the Bulldogs, 18-4.
Ormerod (3g, 3a) led all players with six points on the day. Four Bulldogs ended the day with three points. Alex Cordero picked up the win with three saves in 52:19 of play. Joel Borman suffered the loss, tying his career-high with 18 saves.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, March 20th when they take on Lincoln Memorial. The contest is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
