Mars Hill downs Barton in non-conference clash
The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-2) defeated Barton (1-3) by a score of 10-7 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-2) defeated Barton (1-3) by a score of 10-7 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions outscored Barton 6-3 in the second half of play, netting three goals in both the third and fourth quarters. Tied at four entering the third, Barton struck twice, but the Lions responded with three straight goals to end the quarter. Austin Stroud, Ben Hokenson, and Josh McCallion put the Lions up 7-6 entering the final 15 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs once again opened the quarter with the first goal, but like in the third, the Lions scored three straight goals. In a span of 4:02, goals were scored by Brandon Woodward, Braden Hoskyn, and McCallion. Stroud picked up his third point of the contest with the assist on McCallion's hat-trick tally.
In the final two minutes of play, Steven Smith made several key saves to keep the Lions' lead safe until the final buzzer.
Mars Hill led 2-1 after the first quarter with goals scored from AJ Howland and Cole Ross. Howland's marker came just eight seconds into the contest. In the second, Zack Gardner-McMinn and McCallion scored the Lion goals.
McCallion (3g) and Stroud (1g, 2a) led the Lions with three points. Ross, Woodward, and Hoskyn each posted one goal and one assist for two points on the day. Smith made 18 saves for his second win of the season.
Mars Hill will face Montevallo on the road on Friday, February 23. Faceoff is set for a 4 p.m. CST start time.
