Lions open SAC play against Wingate

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-4, 0-1 SAC) fell to Wingate (4-1, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 23-5 in their South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs held Mars Hill scoreless in the first quarter, netting five goals. In the second, 3:11 into the frame, George Yanssens broke the shutout bid. Willie Grieco struck two more times, tallying four goals for Wingate in the half.
Mars Hill opened the second half with two quick goals from Brandon Woodward and Austin Stroud. Wingate responded with six straight before Josh McCallion's rip with 3:05 remaining in the quarter put an end to the Bulldogs' run.
Cole Ross scored the final Mars Hill goal with 2:18 left in the contest.
Grieco led all players with nine points (4g, 5a) while Ross led the Lions with three (1g, 2a). Both Stroud and Yanssens ended the day with two points (1g, 1a).
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, March 9 when they face Catawba on the road. Faceoff is set for a 12 p.m. start.
