Lions Earn Road Win Over Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team scored three goals in the span of four minutes in the first half for a 4-1 victory over Carson-Newman on Wednesday night at McCown Field. Mars Hill improves to 7-6 overall and 7-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Carson-Newman falls to 5-7-2 overall and 4-3-2 in league play.
Jack Donaldson got the Lions on the board at the 31:25 mark of the first half with his first goal of the season. Alex Mullen found the back of the net 45 seconds later to gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. Mullen tallied his sixth goal of the 2014 campaign with an assist from Kenny Anderson just over two minutes later for a 3-0 Mars Hill lead. Carson-Newman got on the scoreboard on a Lucas Siqueira tally with 50 seconds to play in the opening half to make the halftime score 3-1.
With just over 18 minutes to play in the match, Amine Merdjett finished a pass from Mullen in the left side of the net for his third goal in the past two matches to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.
"We were a different team today," Mullen said. "After about 15 minutes we decided to press and from then on our wingers dominated play. We are in the running for this conference title and I think we are more than capable of winning it." With two matches remaining, the Lions are in second place behind 18th-ranked Wingate and have won four of their last five matches.
Carson-Newman took 13 shots on goal compared to 12 by the Lions, but Mars Hill enjoyed a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Lions had six corner kicks, with the Eagles taking three corners. Oliver Pannell made one save for his fourth win of the season, with Micah Varner stopping three shots for Carson-Newman.
Mars Hill travels to Brevard for a 3:30 p.m. start on Saturday.
