CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (3-2, 0-1 SAC) battled tough in a 2-0 losing effort against the defending South Atlantic Conference champion Wingate Bulldogs (3-1-1, 1-0 SAC) Wednesday evening to open up conference play.
Mars Hill's lone shot on goal came from the foot of Adnan Saltagic in the 33rd minute, but Pablo Jara made the stop to keep the game knotted at zero.
The game was tied until the 38th minute when Nate Evans scored his second goal of the year, finishing off a perfect crossing pass from Adam Robinson that he headed past goalkeeper Brian Salzman against the grain. Salzman managed to get a finger on the ball while he was falling away, but the momentum of the ball found its way to the back of the net to give Wingate a 1-0 lead with 7:17 remaining in the first half.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, Soren Nygaard took advantage of an aggressive Mars Hill defense and slid the ball past a sprawled Salzman inside the far post to double the Bulldog lead.
The Lions were outshot 13-5 in the contest, but of the Bulldog's 13 shots, only three found their way on target.
Mars Hill returns home to take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, September 19 in conference action beginning at 7:30 p.m.
