JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (6-5-2, 2-4-2 SAC) drew 1-1 with Carson-Newman (7-3-2, 3-2-2 SAC) Wednesday evening.
The Lions struck first with a goal from Matthew Jackson. Off of a free kick attempt taken by Adnan Saltagic, Jackson was able to put the ball behind Eagles' goalkeeper Twan Verwij. Mars Hill held the lead for 24 minutes until Jonny Le Quesne tied the game at one. From eight yards out, Le Quesne placed the ball past Mars Hill goalkeeper Brian Salzman to tie the contest.
Mars Hill was outshot 10-3 in the opening half. They were outshot in every period played, including the second, where the deficit was 13-4 to close out regulation.
Carson-Newman had an opportunity to take the lead five minutes into the second half when the South Atlantic Conference's third leading scorer, Ashley Kelynack, was denied by Salzman on a penalty kick opportunity. The save marks Salzman's second penalty kick save of the year.
Salzman once again loomed large for Mars Hill, making three saves in the first overtime frame. He would end the night with a career-high 10 saves and .909 save percentage. He currently leads the SAC with 60 saves.
"Salzman was excellent throughout," head coach Gregg Munn added about his freshman goalkeeper's performance.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, October 20th with a road contest against Tusculum. Action is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
