The Lions sit only behind University of Mount Olive in the polls after two impressive meets to open the 2016 campaign. Senior Nathan Jones led the way for Mars Hill with an eighth place finish at the Covered Bridge Cross Country Meet, first among non-DI runners, followed by an 11th place finish at the Furman XC Invitational.
Junior Garrett Farrimond finished just behind Jones in 31st position, while at Furman and several runners continue to improve on times to start the season.
The Lions are one of three South Atlantic Conference teams to be featured in the Southeast Region rankings as Queens (N.C.) sits in third and Anderson occupies eighth.
Both cross country teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 17 as they travel to take part in the Montevallo Pre-Region Meet.
