Lincoln Memorial upsets Women’s Basketball, 81-79
Young scores team-high 25 points
HARROGATE, Tenn. - A last-second game-tying shot attempt by Brittini Young was blocked by Whitney Holmes to preserve Lincoln Memorial's 81-79 upset of Mars Hill at Tex Turner Arena. The Lady Railsplitters improve to 6-7 overall, 1-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lions end a five-game win streak and drop to 10-3 overall, 3-2 in the league.
Dayshalee Salaman scored a game-high 28 points for Lincoln Memorial. Destiny Williams added 13 points. Holmes and Patrice Talley each had nine points.
Young pumped in a team-high 25 points. Jessica Jones recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Deal hauled in 13 rebounds.
Mars Hill held a four-point advantage three minutes into the game, but the Lady Railsplitters led for most of the first half. Lincoln Memorial led by nine points, 36-27, off a trey by Salaman with 1:14 remaining in the first period and took a 36-32 upper hand into halftime.
The Lions opened the first 3:28 of the second half on an 11-0 run. A three-pointer by Tyler Carlson gave Mars Hill its largest advantage of the game, 43-36.
The Lions again led by seven points, 50-43, at the 14:08 mark of the second half off a jumper by Margaret Harvey, but the Lady Railsplitters outscored Mars Hill 30-10 over a 10-minute span to assume control of the game. A fastbreak layup by Salaman gave Lincoln Memorial a 73-60 lead with 4:36 left.
Mars Hill responded with a 19-7 spurt and held the Lady Railsplitters without a field goal for the final 4:36 of the contest. A shot from behind the arc by Kristen Metcalf with 20 seconds remaining cut the deficit to one-point, 80-79, but the Lions would get no closer.
Lincoln Memorial was 26-63 (41.3%) from the floor and 5-14 (35.7%) from three-point range. Mars Hill was 29-77 (37.7%) from the floor and 6-22 (27.3%) from three-point range.
The Lions will host Wingate on Saturday, January 15. Tipoff from Stanford Arena is set for 2 p.m. ET.
