Women’s Basketball falls at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman defeated Mars Hill, 85-78, inside Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. The Lady Eagles improve to 11-14, 7-8 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Lions fall to 15-8, 8-7 in league play.
Zoriah Williams paced Carson-Newman with a double-double (23 points, 11 rebounds). Shannon Depew added 18 points. Mandy Mendenhall and Candis Clear had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Brittini Young led Mars Hill with 22 points. Tyler Carlson pumped in 16 points, while Margaret Harvey had 10. Taylor Deal led the Lions with seven rebounds.
Mars Hill held its largest lead of the game, 12-8, off a layup by Young with 15:30 left in the first half. However, Carson-Newman led for the final 12:08 of the period and all of the second half.
The Lady Eagles were up 45-34 at halftime.
The Lions cut the second-half deficit to as little as six points on three occasions. A bucket by Beth Miller with 11:32 left in the game made the score 56-50.
Mars Hill trailed 84-78 after a layup from Harvey with 29 seconds remaining, but Clear made one of two free throws down the stretch for the final margin.
The Lions were 25-60 (41.7%) from the field, 8-19 (42.1%) from three-point range, and 20-25 (80%) from the free throw line. Carson-Newman was 26-59 (44.1%) from the field, 4-15 (26.7%) from behind the arc, and 29-36 (80.6%) from the charity stripe.
Mars Hill will travel to Wingate on Saturday, February 19. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
