Trojans Spoil Glymph's Big Night
Camille Glymph scored 39 points but the Lions lost in overtime at Anderson 94-85.
ANDERSON, S.C. - Reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Camille Glymph scored 39 points but the Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 94-85 to Anderson in overtime on Wednesday. Mars Hill drops to 5-9 overall and 3-6 in the SAC while Anderson improves to 10-3 overall and 7-2.
Glymph's 39 points are the most scored by any Mars Hill player since Denise Shelton scored 41 points in an 82-64 victory at Gardner-Webb on December 15, 2001. Glymph finished three points shy of tying Sonia Gahagan's school-record 42 points in a game, set on February 10, 1992 against Presbyterian. She is also among the program leaders in 3-point attempts in a game as the senior fired 14 shots from behind the arc.
Paige Chavis scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds while playing the entire contest. Kelsey Espinosa and Cadence Wilmoth scored nine points each, followed by Victoria Leroy with eight. Wilmoth had a career-high six blocked shots.
Anderson had four starters finish in double figures, led by Lesley Woods with 22 points. Woods went 5-for-11 from behind the 3-point line. Jennifer Monroe scored 14 points, followed by Jasmine Franklin with 13 and Alexis Dillard with 11. Dillard pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Trailing by 12 (57-45) with 12:26 remaining in the second half, the Lions went on a 12-2 run to pull within two points, 59-57, with 9:27 to play. Anderson responded with an 11-3 for a 70-60 lead with just over five minutes to play. With the Trojans holding a 74-66 lead with 2:21 to play, Mars Hill began their final charge with a Wilmoth layup and pulled to within a point following the first of two free throws by Espinosa with 21 seconds left. After Espinosa missed the second shot, Madison Floyd gave the Trojans a three point lead (76-73) following a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left. With less than a second remaining, Glymph was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws to even the score at 76 and force Mars Hill's first overtime game of the season.
Woods opened the scoring in overtime with a layup as the Trojans led from start to finish in the extra period. A Chavis bucket brought the Lions back to within a pair (80-78) with four minutes to play before the Trojans went on a 10-3 run to secure the win.
The first half featured three ties in the first five minutes of before the Trojans held a 27-17 lead with 7:23 on the clock. Mars Hill closed out the half on a 10-0 run to pull within a point, 37-36, heading into the locker room.
Anderson outshot Mars Hill 47.1 percent to 41.8 percent and outrebounded the Lions 45-39.
Mars Hill travels to Catawba on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. contest against the Indians.
