Women's Basketball Defeats Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Mars Hill women's basketball team scored 25 points off of 15 turnovers and pulled away down the stretch to earn a 66-58 victory over Queens in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday. Mars Hill improves to 9-14 and 7-11 in the league while Queens drops to 5-18 and 3-14.

Camille Glymph scored 27 points to lead the Lions. Kelsey Espinosa scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Paige Chavis scored 10 points with eight rebounds. Katie Stevens led the Lions with five assists.

Queens was led by Lacey Singletary with 15 points, followed by Karleasha Thompson and Erin Brundage with 13 points and Abby Pettit with 12 points.

Mars Hill pulled out to an 11-3 lead before a Thompson layup gave the Royals an 18-17 lead with 11:29 to play in the first half. A Glymph 3-pointer gave the Lions a 28-22 lead with 6:11 to go before Singletary gave the hosts a 35-34 lead on a layup with 2:24 to play. Mars Hill closed out the half on a 7-1 run for a 41-36 halftime lead.

The Lions led by 10 points in the first minute of the second half before the Royals cut the Lion lead to two, 46-44, with 15:40 to play in the frame. A pair of Chavis free throws gave Mars Hill a 57-48 lead with 9:30 to play in the game, with an Espinosa jumper giving Mars Hill a game-high 11 point lead, 63-52, with 4:20 to go. Queens would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Queens outshot Mars Hill 46.9 percent to 40.7 percent. Both teams had 15 turnovers.

Mars Hill hosts Tusculum on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
