Women's Basketball Falls to Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost to Lenoir-Rhyne by a final of 64-41 on Saturday afternoon. The Lions fell to 2-14 overall and 0-10 in the conference, while the Bears improved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 within the league.
Madison Ervin led the Lions with a team-high 15 points, while Paige Chavis and Valeriya Pokrovskaya chipped in nine each. Raven Brooks pulled down five boards for MHU. For the game Mars Hill shot 32% (16-50) from the field, including two-for-nine from three.
Justyce Swango and Brooke Robinson scored 15 and 11 points in the win, respectively, to pace the Bears. L-R connected on 47.9% (23-48) of their field goal attempts, 47.1% (8-17) of their attempts from behind the arc and 71.4% (10-14) at the free throw line. The Bears recorded 26 points off Mars Hill miscues, 11 second chance points and received 20 points from their bench. L-R never trailed in the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne shot out of the gate with a 7-0 run before the Lions reeled off six of their own to cut the deficit to 7-6. However, over the next quarter and a half L-R used a 22-6 outburst to head into the locker room with a comfortable 29-12 advantage. That lead grew to as many as 26 (49-23) in the third quarter and 28 (64-36) in the fourth as the Bears cruised to the 64-41 win.
Mars Hill will return to action on Wednesday, January 18 as it plays host to Brevard College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
