Mars Hill falls to Catawba on road
The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-5, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Catawba (5-3, 2-1 SAC) by a score of 94-56 in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-5, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Catawba (5-3, 2-1 SAC) by a score of 94-56 in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The teams played a tightly contest first period until the 6:38 mark where the Indians began a 7-2 run to go up 23-14 with less than a minute remaining. The Indians ended the period by scoring eight straight to enter the second up 31-14. Mercedes Wampler scored six of the final eight points in the frame and 10 points off the bench. Taisha DeShazo went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc for 12 points. Tatum Boggs led the Lions with six points.
Mars Hill responded with an 8-0 run of their own over the first 4:17 of the second frame, led by Brooke Vilcinskas' six points. Catawba answered back by scoring seven straight to take a 38-22 lead with under four minutes remaining in the half. The Indians closed out the half on 13-0 run to balloon their lead to 27 points entering the second half. DeShazo once again led the Indians with eight pints in the frame and closed out the first half with 20 points. Boggs and Vilcinskas each had six points for the Lions in the half.
The third period saw Catawba further extend their lead, outscoring Mars Hill 22-12 in the frame. They entered the fourth up 73-36. Madison Hallman had seven points in the period for Catawba to lead all players while Alexis Pardue scored four points and added three rebounds in the frame for the Lions.
Shemya Stanbeck and Wampler led the charge for Catawba in the final stanza, combining for 17 of the Indians' 21 points. Mariah Johnson scored six of the Lions' 20 in the period while Pardue and Jewel Walston chipped in four apiece.
DeShazo led all players with 23 points and collected six rebounds. Wampler secured the double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Hallman added 10 points and nine assists on the day.
Vilcinskas finished with a team-high 12 points along with four assists. Johnson had 11 points while Pardue added 10 and a team-high nine rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, December 19th when they host Carson-Newman. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Stanford Arena.
