Dominant second quarter leads Lions to win over Warren Wilson

SWANNANOA, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-4) defeated Warren Wilson (1-2) on the road Friday evening by a score of 65-54 for their first win of the 2019-20 campaign.
After the first 10 minutes of play, Mars Hill held a 17-14 advantage over the Owls with Hannah Chandler's six points pacing the Lions offense. De'Ja Marshall and Gabby Gianikos added four apiece. Warren Wilson's Kajahda McCoy led all players in the first quarter with seven points.
Mars Hill dominated play in the second quarter, hitting 50 percent of their shots from the floor while draining 9-of-11 free throws to outscore the Owls 25-10. Tatum Boggs was 2-for-2 from the floor, including one three pointer to lead all players with six points in the frame. Trinity Barkley added four while Kiara Johnson, Alexis Pardue, and Hannah McIntosh each added three.
The Lions held the 42-24 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.
Warren Wilson outscored Mars Hill in the second half, 30-23, but the deficit was too large to overcome as the Owls fell by 11 points.
In the third, Danielle Hinkleman scored five points for the Owls to lead all scorers. Despite Marshall's 11 points in the fourth, the Lions were outscored 18-13 in the final 10 minutes of play as Malaka Elix led Warren Wilson with seven points followed by Kalie Mayo's five.
Mayo led the Owls with 14 points and collected eight rebounds on the night. Elix ended the contest with nine points while Sam Hoyle led all players with 10 rebounds.
Mars Hill shot 40 percent from the floor with Marshall's 17 points leading the way, going 7-of-11 on the night. Johnson added 10 points, followed by McIntosh's seven.
Mars Hill travels to Wise, Virginia on Tuesday, November 26 to take on the Cavaliers in their South Atlantic Conference season opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
